Magic Melting Marshmallows

What happens when you microwave  marshmallows for different times? For this experiment we used the skills of observation, touch and smell. Look at the pictures of what happened. The marshmallows were heated for 10, 20, 30 and 50 seconds.
The marshmallow puffed up when heated and deflated when cooling. The change was permanent.

What was going on?
Marshmallows are mostly sugar and water wrapped around a bunch of air bubbles. When you cook marshmallows in your microwave oven, several things happen at once. The microwave makes the water molecules vibrate very quickly—which makes the water heat up. The hot water warms the sugar, which softens a little. The hot water also warms the air bubbles. When you warm air in a closed container, the gas molecules move around faster and push harder against the walls of the container. As the air in the bubbles warms up, the air molecules bounce around faster and faster and push harder against the bubble walls. Since the sugar walls are warm and soft, the bubbles expand, and the marshmallow puffs up. If it puffs up too much, some air bubbles burst, and the marshmallow deflates like a popped balloon. When you take the marshmallow out of the microwave and it cools off, the bubbles shrink and the sugar hardens again. When the microwave marshmallow cools, it’s dry and crunchy. We think that’s because some of the water in the marshmallow evaporates when the marshmallow is hot. If you cook your marshmallow for too long, it turns brown or black inside. That happens when the sugar gets so hot that it starts to burn.

Two Heads are Better than One.

Last week Room 8 were writing their stories using proverbs or sayings as the base. To check their stories and find  good ideas they worked with a buddy. We read lots of stories that can teach us things like the Little Red Hen. It was a lot of fun. Working with a buddy is like 2 heads are better than one.

Making Butter.

What happens when you shake cream in a jar for about 8 minutes? You make butter!

What can you do with butter? Eat it on a cracker of course! Yummy !

More Dancing Raisins

Room 8 followed the instructions and made some dancing raisins of our own.
So why do they dance ?
Raisins are denser than the liquid in the lemonade, so initially they sink to the bottom of the glass. The carbonated soft drink releases carbon dioxide bubbles. When these bubbles stick to the rough surface of a raisin, the raisin is lifted because of the increase in buoyancy. When the raisin reaches the surface, the bubbles pop, and the carbon dioxide gas escapes into the air. This causes the raisin to lose buoyancy and sink. This rising and sinking of the raisins continues until most of the carbon dioxide has escaped, and the soda goes flat. Over time the raisin gets soggy and becomes too heavy to rise to the surface

Procedure Reading

We were focusing on procedures a few weeks ago.We read and followed lots of procedures to make a stretchy net , a cat puppet, a little house and letter envelope.
We could read and identify the elements but actually doing what the instructions said to do to make the thing was a challenge.  Luckily we had some expert makers in the class to help. The thing we all needed was patience!
We are using our skills to read and write a procedure which flows on to our science topic.

Rocket Week

We finally got to make our rockets and voted for the rocket to represent our class. Ted and Myles were in charge of the launching. The rest of the class had a turn on Tuesday .
