Movie Making

On Tuesday student wrote a script for their puppet play. Their questions and answer should reflect the knowledge they have gained over the term. The sock puppet will talk to Mr Raindrop.

We learned a lot about making a movie.
  •  It is hard to film in a classroom.
  • You need another pair of hands and a director
  • You have to work quickly to get finished
Next week we will work on the play again to get things sorted.

Here are our first sock puppets. They are going to be actors in a play about water on our i pads next week. We think they are cool !

The Water Carrier Challenge

This week our challenge was to design a creative carrier that could carry 1 litre across the playground without spilling or getting tired. See what we came up with!

What information Do I Need?

Today with our little maths class we did some problem solving. Mrs Chao wrote a problem on the board and the class, working in groups had to decide what information they needed to solve the problem.

Groups had to think of their questions for information and could only ask one at a time. Then they tried to solve the problem.

Look at the information we needed to have!
We learned some things:
  • You need to work as a team
  • You need to add the numbers very carefully to get the right answer.
  • You need to have checkers checking the answer .

Santa's Workshop

On Tuesday a group of Room 8 elves gathered to make special reindeer food for the Eastbourne Carnival. There were lots of jobs like twisty tying, hole punching, tag tying, stirring and  measuring to make sure every person got the same amount in their bag.

More Animations

Today we worked on making a jointed figure and using i motion to record a small movie. Along the way we learned about keeping the ipad still, not having fingers in the way and explored how to change the joints for more movement.

A Special Visitor

Today inventor Oscar McClelland came to visit to Room 8 to show us his amazing invention Vacuum Cleaner Shoes. It was invented to suck up the dirt from dirty shoes. Noah got to try it out and it really worked.
Well that has given us lots of ideas for inventing other things. Thanks Oscar!
Oscar's first invention was the skate bat when he was in Year 4.

Picture Puzzle

On Wednesday we worked in groups using our observational skills to look at pictures from a poster. They all were from different countries and involved  different  water activities.  It was hard but we did discover some facts. Students had to match the country in each picture and guess what was happening.

  • Countries near the equator are hotter and water is hard to get.
  • Countries in other parts of the world have more water to use and plants are easier to grow
  • Children carry water for their families

The Solar Eclipse of the Sun

On Wednesday there was great excitement as we went outside to view a solar eclipse of the sun.

We learned that the word eclipse means move in front of, and the moon was moving across the sky, in front the sun. We were able to look at the eclipse with special glasses so we didn't damage our eyes. It was amazing.

We also had live feed on the data projector showing us the progress of the moon across the sun.

Oscar's Model

Oscar has been making  the Tasmanian devil for a What Now competition.  It is made from screwed up newspaper covered in sellotape. To make it stronger he covered it with papier mache . Then he painted the head and added details like eyes which are beads. The animal is covered in fake fur to make it look real and  fluffy. The eyes were marked with pins before the beads were pushed in.

When he sends it in Oscar will add information about how he made it so  the What Now people understand how he made it.

He also built a sign to say Save Us as they are nearly extinct.

Face Animation

We are learning to animate and make simple movies with an ipad. With a new buddy, students used blank faces to add expression to a character . Then we took pictures of each face and kept changing the face in the background. When the pictures are all put together we should have a little movie.

Cricket Wellington Visit

Two members from  Cricket Wellington came to school today to teach us some skills and let us  have a go at nonstop cricket. It was hot in the sun but fun. The best part was getting a prize pack at the end!

To Homework or Not ?

This week for homework, students wrote an argument supporting homework or not. Charlotte argued very strongly for no homework and it became a heated debate.
Evie gathered supporters for her "yes to homework group".

Everyone stated very valid reasons for their point of view.
What do you think?

i Pad Day !

Lucky us as we were able to use the ipads all day today. First we spent time exploring the programmes and sharing ideas with the class and then it was time for maths. Luckily Room 7 students knew which were the good apps to try.

During the day we made a sock puppet movie that presented information about water. One puppet asked a question and the other puppet answered the question. The pairs shared with other pairs and then the class. That was fun as there were lots of different things to choose from to make the movie different from other groups.

After lunch we made an i-mation movie. We wrote a book title letter by letter or word by word!! Considering it was our first time everyone was amazing. Just about all the groups got finished. We can't wait for next week to have another go. Look at the movie below to see an example.
