Beach Clean Up Day

As part of our water study, Oliver from Sustainable Coastlines gave us a presentation about where rubbish can go when in the sea. Sea creatures can eat the rubbish, mistaking it for food.
Afterwards we had a beach clean up.We didn't think there was a lot of rubbish but in total we picked up over 300 litres of rubbish in just a couple of hours!

Goodbye William

William is off to Paris with his family so we had a shared morning tea on Thursday. We will miss  you a lot William. Keep in touch and good luck William. Au Revoir

Fizzing and foaming

After making our yummy bread we mixed some ingredients in a plastic bag. We were only allowed to guess what they were. Some were not nice to taste but altogether in a bag when added to our tongue they fizzed to make a nice taste.
It was even better with lollipops dipped in.
Yum. Sherbert is very nice.

Yummy Bread.

On Wednesday we made  fresh bread in room 8. It was so yummy and everyone enjoyed it. To eat it students chose from plum jam, marmite or hummus as a topping.
And what was it that made the bread yummy?Without yeast the bread would not taste well. If you look carefully you can see the small holes which are made from the bubbles of carbon dioxide.

In a warm bowl put 1tbsp of dry yeast
1 tbsp of sugar or honey
1 and 1/2 tsp salt and add 1 1/2 cups of warm water.
Cover the bowl with a tea towel and leave for 10-20 minutes until the mixture foams

Add 3 and 1/2 cups of high grade flour and stir. When it is almost a ball tip out on the bench and knead for about a minute until it starts to become smooth. Shape into an oval loaf. Cover and leave on a baking tray until the loaf has risen- 20 -40 minutes.Slash the top and rub with olive oil. Bake at 200c for 30 minutes. Allow to cool before cutting .
Enjoy !

Area and Perimeter Maths

Good Job Room 8 !

There is Fungus Among Us !

This week we have been investigating dormant yeast. When yeast has favourable environmental conditions it wakes up.

What does yeast look like ?

When yeast has favourable environmental conditions it wakes up.
We added warm water and a sugar cube for food. We saw the mixture fizz and foam up and over the sides of the cups.
It smelled a bit like beer or bread. The bubbles were a chemical reaction making the yeast release the  carbon dioxide.
What did it look like ?
The next day the yeast had dried up a lot .The foaming had released most of the carbon dioxide by the next morning.

Our next challenge is to think of a way to change the experiment and predict what might happen.
