Chance Investigation - Likelihood

Today we  undertook an investigation into chance and likelihood. We had a bag of 4 yellow, 4 red and 4 blue counters. Someone secretly removed 2 counters and the other people in the group had to guess which ones were  left in the bag.
One person took a counter out 20 times and the counters were recorded by colour on a tally chart. And then we guessed the combination of colours.

Well it was not easy to guess the combination of colours left in the bag. Some sneaky people took 2 of the same colour out !

It was fun and we repeated it again giving other people a turn to be the leader .

Can we make Ice Colder?

On Friday we posed the question can we make ice colder? We talked about ice and how water can change and measured the temperature of the ice in the cup with a thermometer. Ice freezes at 0 c. Most of our ice was round about freezing point. The ice was starting to melt as it was absorbing the heat within the room.

We added salt and stirred the ice and we saw the thermometer level move quite quickly down  to -15c and then to -20 c. The ice cubes started to stick together.
What caused this to happen?

We know that salt causes ice to melt more quickly and it becomes slushy and colder. Rapidly melting ice absorbs heat more quickly and it becomes colder.

Tweeting

We have a new twitterberg in our corridor where students can ask a question and other students can answer it on sticky notes. It is a twitterberg because it is shaped like an iceberg and we are studying the Antarctica.

Students have enjoyed researching the questions and are learning to give the source of their answer. This is important so students  can prove their answer is factual rather than they "just know it ".This is called giving evidence. Does the answer come from a book or an internet site and which one?

It has been fun to see the wall display grow.
