Fizzing and foaming

After making our yummy bread we mixed some ingredients in a plastic bag. We were only allowed to guess what they were. Some were not nice to taste but altogether in a bag when added to our tongue they fizzed to make a nice taste.
It was even better with lollipops dipped in.
Yum. Sherbert is very nice.

Yummy Bread.

On Wednesday we made  fresh bread in room 8. It was so yummy and everyone enjoyed it. To eat it students chose from plum jam, marmite or hummus as a topping.
And what was it that made the bread yummy?Without yeast the bread would not taste well. If you look carefully you can see the small holes which are made from the bubbles of carbon dioxide.

In a warm bowl put 1tbsp of dry yeast
1 tbsp of sugar or honey
1 and 1/2 tsp salt and add 1 1/2 cups of warm water.
Cover the bowl with a tea towel and leave for 10-20 minutes until the mixture foams

Add 3 and 1/2 cups of high grade flour and stir. When it is almost a ball tip out on the bench and knead for about a minute until it starts to become smooth. Shape into an oval loaf. Cover and leave on a baking tray until the loaf has risen- 20 -40 minutes.Slash the top and rub with olive oil. Bake at 200c for 30 minutes. Allow to cool before cutting .
Enjoy !

Area and Perimeter Maths

Room 8  have worked with Mrs Pitman learning about  the area and perimeter of shapes. Today they were calculating the area and perimeter of 2D shapes and made this beautiful mural.
Good Job Room 8 !

There is Fungus Among Us !

This week we have been investigating dormant yeast. When yeast has favourable environmental conditions it wakes up.

What does yeast look like ?

When yeast has favourable environmental conditions it wakes up.
We added warm water and a sugar cube for food. We saw the mixture fizz and foam up and over the sides of the cups.
It smelled a bit like beer or bread. The bubbles were a chemical reaction making the yeast release the  carbon dioxide.
What did it look like ?
The next day the yeast had dried up a lot .The foaming had released most of the carbon dioxide by the next morning.

Our next challenge is to think of a way to change the experiment and predict what might happen.

Cross country Certificates

At our team assembly several people from Room 8 got a certificate for being in the top 10 finishers in the cross country race. Who can you see ?

Kia Kaha

We have been learning about our rights and responsibilities and have made a waka with all of room 8. We are all in the same waka, paddling the same way. This shows the way we  want and need to be to be part of a community in room 8.

We have rights but we also have responsibilities towards other people.

Clever in Maths

Emma, Bella and Joss have been learning to add and subtract 10 from a number. Can you see the pattern in the numbers?
Maths is fun.

Clever learners !

Strong Mouse or Strong Cheese

Room 8 has been watching film clips and movies and writing from a point of view or  turning it into news item.
Check out this clip and think about it as a news item. Is it a miracle?

Everyone has got so much better both in skill and confidence. Here we are having our last rehearsal.
